DESCRIPTION OF THE CONTENTS OF THE MODULE

Non-standard and Interactive Architecture addresses not only issues of interdisciplinary design implemented in digitally and electronically augmented spatial environments but also issues of prototypes development for non-standard and interactive architecture:

The focus is on development of computer-based methodologies for design conceptualization, representation, and computer-aided manufacturing. In this context, real-time interactive environments are conceived as connectivities of buildings with virtual prototypes articulated with parametric relations and embedded sensing technologies. These enable emergent spatial behaviors through real-time data exchange based on multi-player game designs, reformulating real life constraints in a structure of logical rule settings and elaborate sensor fields activating responsive architectural systems.

Hyperbody offers courses on Non-standard and Interactive Architecture addressing most recent developments in architectural theory and practice, as well as building and information technology. Non-standard architecture is defined as an architecture, which departs from modernist, repetitive, mass-production principles in order to address complexity, variation, and mass-customization. In this context, computer-based design and production and their influence on design thinking are topics of particular interest. Furthermore, interactivity in architecture is addressed at the level where building components and buildings become dynamic, acting and re-acting in response to environ-mental and user-specific needs.

This program addresses, therefore, topics such as interactive architecture, parametric design, scripting- and programming-based design, CAD-CAM processes and collaborative computer-based platforms for information generation and exchange. This time the focus is on the development of an interactive game portal - additional information with respect to the specific topic of design and research is submitted directly to registered participants via email

 EXPECTED COMPETENCES AS LEARNING  OUTCOMES TEACHING METHODS EVALUATION METHODS

1. Research skills in reasoning and critical reflecting on existing knowledge as well as ability to develop unprecedented knowledge in the domain of non-standard and interactive architecture.

2. Interactive design as well as graphical scripting skills in Virtools, if applicable.

Internet-based lecture-movies, tutorials; written and spoken communication via email and video-conferencing.

Review of research report. Review of interactive design game developed in Virtools, if applicable. 

 

 DELIVERABLES OF THE MODULE

1. Interactive design game developed in Virtools and implemented in the E-ArchiDoct Internet-based platform by connecting it to the Hyperbody-portal, if applicable.
2. Concept description and research report.

 OTHER CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MODULE

This module is offered in connectivity with NS&IA 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 covering in total 20-21 ECTS. These will be concretized in the near future.

In general, courses offered by Hyperbody within E-ArchiDoct exceed the level of supporting courses focusing on topics such as methodologies of writing research papers, instead they address specific research topics such as Non-standard and Interactive Architecture. These courses cover in total 30 ECTS, whereas 30 ECTS are composed of 20 ECTS compulsory and 10 ECTS free choice. Free choice ECTS can be acquired by participating in E-ArchiDoct courses offered by other partners.

Research and design work submitted by researchers participating in the program are internationally peer-reviewed.
