DESCRIPTION OF THE CONTENTS OF THE MODULE

SpaceCustomizer implements digital design strategies based on non-Euclidean geometries, incorporating the following research topics: [1] Modernity & Contemporaneity, [2] Non-Euclidean & Euclidean Geometries, and [3] Movement Studies & Ergonomics.

Modernity & Contemporaneity introduces concept pairs such as Collage & Morphing, Image & UserInterface, Index & HyperIndex, Standardization & MassCustomization, while Non-Euclidean & Euclidean geometries studies and implements both geometries in architectural concepts. Finally, Movement studies & Ergonomics involve a methodology of digital design based on NURBS by following the movement of the body in space.

The SC-course consists of video-conference meetings, where teacher and participants interact with each other, as well as downloadable tutorials and references, and video-streamed lectures, where no interaction between tutor and participants takes place.

 

 EXPECTED COMPETENCES AS LEARNING  OUTCOMES TEACHING METHODS EVALUATION METHODS

1. Research skills in reasoning and critical reflecting on existing knowledge as well as ability to develop unprecedented knowledge in the domain of SpaceCustomization.

2. Design based on SpaceCustomization-principles.

Internet-based tutorials, written and spoken communication via email and video-conferencing, respectively.

Review of paper, presentation and design, if applicable.

 DELIVERABLES OF THE MODULE

1. Participants submit prepared PPT-presentations on designated research topics.
2. Rhino-tutorial dealing with the use of non-Euclidean geometries in architecture via downloadable AVI-movies and Rhino-files are employed by participants in the development of designs, which are presented via PPT-presentations uploaded on the E-ArchiDoct site.
3. Paper describing research and design concept uploaded by participants and re-viewed by tutor via added comments in word-processing documents such as DOC- or PDF-files.

 OTHER CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MODULE

This module is offered in connectivity with other T&BC courses. Preliminarily planed as a one-year program, organized to facilitate PhD researchers based outside the TUD Faculty of Architecture, the program consists of compulsory [2/3] and free-choice [1/3] e-courses covering 30 ECTS per semester.

SC 1 is offered in fall 2008 in connectivity with SC 2, which will be offered in spring 2009. SC 1& 2 cover in total 6 ECTS.
